Dublin Dishes: Forest & Marcy

Dublin Dishes explores our dining experiences throughout the city.

To celebrate our third wedding anniversary yesterday, Steve made dinner reservations at Forest & Marcy in Dublin 4. I had previously interviewed the owners, John and Sandy Wyer, for Eats Abroad, and critics have been raving about this cozy wine bar and kitchen since its opening in 2016.

The food was, in a word, impeccable. Plates are available a la carte or you can go for a five-course chef’s tasting menu; we opted for the latter. It was so much food; we were surprised to receive nearly every item on the a la carte menu.

Funny enough, the starters stole the show for both of us. Maybe it’s because there were so many contrasting and complementing flavors and textures going on in these bite-sized morsels, but these plates were the most memorable for us.

Caramelized onion bread with homemade butter
To start: Caramelized onion bread with homemade butter.
Quinoa crisps topped with pears, walnuts, and blue cheese from Forest & Marcy
Snack #1: Quinoa crisps topped with pears, walnuts, and blue cheese. We wanted to steal the Tupperware full of quinoa crisps.
Beef tartare with oyster emulsion from Forest & Marcy
Snack #2: Beef tartare with oyster emulsion. We wanted a dozen more of these.
Fermented potato bread with bacon and cabbage topping and smoked bacon mousse at Forest & Marcy
Fermented potato bread with bacon and cabbage topping and smoked bacon mousse. This is a favorite of the owners, and it’s easy to see why.
Foie gras pavé with plum, pistachio, and rose at Forest & Marcy
First course #1: Foie gras pavé with plum, pistachio, and rose. It tasted as wonderful as it looked.
Salt baked celeriac, ox tongue, apple, and sauce gribiche from Forest & Marcy
First course #2: Salt baked celeriac, ox tongue, apple, and sauce gribiche. A beautiful blend of flavors, and the tender tongue melted in our mouths.
Pumpkin ravioli at Forest & Marcy
Main course #1: Pumpkin ravioli. A chef’s special that wasn’t on the a la carte menu, so a total surprise to us! Divine.
Brill with parsnips, lemon, pickled cockles, and brown butter from Forest & Marcy
Main course #2: Brill with parsnips, lemon, pickled cockles, and brown butter. Delicate, flaky, buttery—everything you could want with a fish dish.
Brown sugar and sherry tart, raisins, and clementine leaf from Forest & Marcy
Dessert: Brown sugar and sherry tart, raisins, and clementine leaf. Sweet, smooth, tart . . . oh so good.
Comté from Forest & Marcy
Cheese course: Comté. You can never go wrong with Comté.
Our parting gift

For €49 per person, it’s a great deal. We left stuffed—we definitely felt like we got our money’s worth—and we thoroughly enjoyed every single dish. Highly, highly recommend, and be sure to make reservations. Tasting menus last two hours.
